Sydney: Bring me anything Jarod left behind before he did this. (Sydney stands and spreads his arms wide, reaching for the imaginary walls that are his prison.) They will never let me out of here. (Dr Goetz is sitting behind her desk with a pen and notebook in hand. Jarod sits across the desk from her. On the desk is a lit candle. Jarod stares into its flame as he responds to Dr Goetz’s prompting.)
Dr Goetz: Why don’t you tell me who you are and where you came from?
Jarod: You wouldn’t believe me.
Dr Goetz: Try me.

Dr Goetz: Where exactly is this Centre?

Jarod: It’s everywhere. (Jarod notices a drawing pad on Dr Goetz’s desk.) Can I draw a
picture? I like to draw.
Dr Goetz: Maybe later. (Dr Goetz stands and picks up the drawing pad. She walks around
the desk to stand beside Jarod.) Why don’t you tell me a little bit about this Centre?

Dr Goetz: How did they do this to you?
Jarod: They had eyes in every ceiling, every wall. They never blinked. They were always
on me, (In a sing-song voice) every minute every hour every day of my life.
Dr Goetz: Why’d they do this to you? (She returns to her seat behind her desk.)
Jarod: To control me. I’m a pretender. I can become anyone I want to be. (He seems to be
quite proud of this and looks at the doctor, almost as if to elicit a challenge from her.
However, his confidence does not last long.) Except I don’t know who I am. I’ve been a
shrink before. It’s really very over-rated. (He is mocking her. She seems to take it very well.)
You don’t believe me?

Broots: Do you think whatever Jarod found out about his father and your mother caused this?
(Miss Parker flips through the pages of some of the books. In one of them she finds a
notebook. There is a flashback to her mother’s lifeless body as she last saw it in the elevator at the Centre. She takes it out and starts flipping through it. It is a flick book that depicts the murder of Catherine Parker.)

And of course, Sydney.
Dr Goetz: Who’s Sydney? (She picks up her notebook again to take notes.)
Jarod: Pavlov to my dog, provider, protector, patriarch. He created me. You see I’m
extremely valuable to The Centre. And while I search for who I am, they search for me. (He leans forward and blows out the candle.)

The door is closed and Jarod peers out until the orderly closes the sliding door over the observation window. Jarod leans against the door, not moving.)
Dr Goetz: He certainly believes it.

Dr Blythe: That’s what scares me. I say keep him restrained and place him in the maximum security section.

me. (Jarod holds her face between his hands making her look at him.) I want you to stop
taking the medication. It’s been making your mind sick when it’s really not. Someone has
been trying to make you forget. It’s very, very important for you remember. (He hugs her to
him and hugs her, gently rocking her as she continues to sob.)
The Centre
(Miss Parker is sitting at her desk. Lyle is pacing up and down. He turns suddenly and bangs his hands down on the desk. The left one is bandaged.)
Mr Lyle: Clearly Jarod’s crazy. In my opinion it’s the only explanation for his carelessness.
The question is why. Why is Jarod gone off the deep end and how did he manage to get. . .
Parker: Stop. Just the how in the hell did you get back in here?
Mr Lyle: I believe the Triumvirate as well as your father see me as a man who is willing to
literally sacrifice his own flesh and blood for what he believes in.
Parker: As opposed to kidnapping, embezzling, murderer? (She stands up and folds her
arms.)
Mr Lyle: It’s all perspective. (He removes the bandage from his left hand.)
Some see a missing thumb, others four perfectly good fingers. I’m having a hell of a time getting this thing to heal over. (He rubs the hand, massaging the fingers.) But like you said. Sacrifice. You know they actually offered to transplant my big toe to re-create a new thumb.
Parker: Nobody recreates quite like you do Bobby.
Mr Lyle: Tell me Parker. Exactly what are you willing to sacrifice?
Parker: Well my mother sacrificed more than her thumb. And I am willing to give just as
much as she did. (She hands him the photo of her mother holding her as a baby. Lyle cuts his thumb on the sharp edge. He sucks the blood. Miss Parker hands him a tissue which he uses to soak up the blood.) Sorry. It would be a shame to lose both of those. (Lyle hands her back the tissue. She takes it delicately between forefinger and thumb with a look of distaste. After he has left Miss Parker takes out a plastic bag and carefully stores the tissue inside.)
In the Woods
(Jarod is running through the woods, all in black, with a flash light guiding his steps. Mist is
rising from the ground and the water. He stops and leans on a tree by the edge of the lake.)
Jarod: Why did Mary jump in the water? She didn’t jump to kill herself. She jumped
because Erica was in the water.
(Jarod dives into the water after placing his flashlight in a plastic bag. He discovers a
submerged vehicle. He examines the number plate, a Maryland registration ZPY 959 and
then scrubs some grime from the front window. He is startled by a skeleton that is sitting on the front seat. There is a bracelet on its wrist ?Erica. He surfaces, the flashlight illuminating the determination on his face.)
The Centre
Renewal Wing
(Mr Raines is wheeled into Sydney’s room, a sweeper forcefully pulling a plastic curtain
aside.)
Raines: If I were you Sydney. I would eat. I question how many more opportunities you will
have to do so. (Sydney tips the tray of food up and onto the floor where the metal tray makes a loud noise. He has kept hold of the apple. Raines raises his eyes and is wheeled from Sydney’s room. Sydney takes a bite of the apple. However, some one has stayed behind. Sydney hears the footsteps approaching.)
Sydney: What more Raines? Who’s there?
Mr Lyle: A friend.
The Centre
Miss Parker’s Office
Angelo: (Miss Parker removes a needle from Angelo’s arm.) Ow!
Parker: Sorry. Florence Nightingale I am not. (She places a tissue on the wound and folds
Angelo’s arm upwards to hold it in place.)
Angelo: Truth. (Miss Parker hands him the vial containing his blood.)
真相。
Yes Angelo I am searching for the truth. (She wraps a rubber tube around her arm.
Preparing to draw blood from herself.)
Broots: Oh. Oh. I’m not very good with blood, Miss Parker.
Parker: What did you find out? Who brought Mr Lyle back?
Broots: (Nervously.) Actually it was your father.
Parker: My father wanted Mr Lyle back? (This was not the answer she was expecting.)
Broots: From what I can find out he pulled strings from Europe to Asia to get him re-instated. What in the hell are you doing with this?
Parker: Broots, I want you to DNA fingerprint these samples. (She gathers up the blood
samples and the plastic bag containing the tissue smeared with Lyle’s blood.)
Broots: Okay.
好的。
Parker: It’s time I shook the family tree and sees who falls out.
PWPI
Jimbo: (Jimbo ushers Jarod into Dr Goetz office.) Stay put and stay out of trouble.
Jarod: (Jarod gives Jimbo a big hug.) Thank you for caring. (In his best child-like voice.)
Jimbo: Give it! (Jarod holds out the keys which he has lifted from Jimbo’s belt.)
Jarod: (In his normal voice.) Kleptomania is a hard habit to break.
Jimbo: Hm hmmm. Fingers aren’t. (Jimbo leaves. Jarod holds up Jimbo’s cellular phone
which he lifted from the other side of the man’s belt.)
Hm Hmmm。
(Jarod accesses the Maryland DMV via the computer on Dr Goetz’s desk and discovers that the car belongs to Dr Blythe. He looks at the window to see Dr Blythe. He hears a noise at the door. He clears the screen. When Dr Goetz enters he is sitting on the other side of the desk drawing.)
In the Grounds of PWPI
(Jarod and Dr Goetz are walking along a path with Jimbo walking closely behind them. Jarod is still sketching.)
Dr Goetz: You’re hiding something.
Jarod: Why do you say that?
Dr Goetz: You’re a textbook case Jarod. You did just the right things to get yourself in here.
Not too much. Not too little. You didn’t hurt yourself or anyone else doing it. The question
is why you want to be here.
Jarod: You’re the shrink. (They stop walking.)
Dr Goetz: Well it’s not uncommon for released prison inmates to commit offences to return
to them to the security of an institutionalised environment. The Centre sounds like such an
institution. I just don’t think you want to go back there.
Jarod: No. (Jarod takes a couple of steps forward.)
不
Dr Goetz: Which brings us back to why you’re really here. (Jarod looks over to Mary who is sitting in the garden. She seems to be less zombie like than previously.)
Jarod: To heal.
The Centre
Parker: (She has just left her office and is walking across the main Concourse when her
cellular beeps. She answers it.) What?
Jarod: Did Sydney get his eyes back yet?
Parker: How the hell do you know about that? (She looks around to see if anyone can
overhear her conversation.)
Jarod: Calm down Miss Parker. Stress left unchecked creates madness. (Jarod, too, is
checking his immediate environment, not wanting to be caught talking on the cellular.)
Parker: Well then Hitler should have taken up yoga. How did you get out after the blast?
Jarod: Now, if I told you that it wouldn’t be any fun. How did Daddy make out?
Parker: Better than your’s will when I find him.
Jarod: Misplaced aggression causes madness too.
Parker: You cause madness Jarod. Or should I call you Freud or Houdini this week?
Jarod: Well that’s what makes me mad Miss Parker. I don’t know who I am. Of course you
have the same reason for sleepless nights. How does it feel trying to define the branches of your family tree?
Parker: The identity of my brother is my problem.
Jarod: It’s both our problems. Of course the Parker family picnic will never be the same.
(He disconnects. So does Miss Parker while pondering the latest contact from Jarod.)
Sim Lab
(Miss Parker comes down to the Sim Lab and is surprised to discover that someone has been working there.)
Sydney: I’d know that Chanel anywhere. (She spins to see Sydney, coming down the stairs, a white cane helping him to find his way.)
Parker: Sydney. What are you doing here?
Mr Lyle: We’re working. Together. As a team.
Parker: (Sydney sits down at the desk where he has been working.) Wopty doo. Just one big happy family hey Syd? I’m sorry I must still have some ringing in my ears form that bomb blast. You remember the blast don’t you Sydney?
Mr Lyle: Interesting about that. Upon further review they realised you had reached the
wrong conclusion. (He pats Sydney on the shoulder in a patriarchal manner.) Sydney
wouldn’t have planted that bomb. It was Gar.
Parker: Gar? Gar couldn’t light a stick of dynamite if he had a road map to the fuse. And
why would he?
Mr Lyle: The truth, unfortunately goes to the grave with him.
Parker: Tragedy. But a fortunate one for you Syd, that the Ken doll here corrected overnight the mistakes that my report took a week to find.
Mr Lyle: No the fortunate thing is that the powers that be agree with my findings.
Parker: Would that be the powers in Asia or Europe?
Mr Lyle: The ones that count.
Parker: Gee Sydney. I know you’re blind. I just didn’t realise that deaf and dumb came with the package. (She leans down to whisper the last part of the statement in his ear.)
Sydney: You don’t understand Parker.
Parker: It’s crystal clear. You sold your soul to save your ass. I just hope you don’t get
burned by the guy with the horns and the little red pitch-fork. (Lyle is amused by her analogy. Miss Parker turns to leave.)
Mr Lyle: You know I believe that you are confusing intelligence with guile.
Sydney: We do have work to do.
Mr Lyle: Yes. We, is the operative word. (He pulls up a chair beside Sydney.) Are you in
on this pursuit or not?
Parker: (She reluctantly offers the information.) Jarod contacted me earlier. He sounded
different, disturbed. I came here to research Centre records of his psyche profile. To try and understand his behaviour.
Mr Lyle: Great minds. Sydney and I were just exploring Jarod’s dive off the deep end as
well.
Parker: Do you think he’s really gone crazy?
Sydney: Maybe he’s pretending to have lost his faculties so as not to stand out from others who have lost theirs.
Mr Lyle: Like in an asylum.
Parker: Well he would certainly fit in around here.

Mary’s Room
Mary: (Jarod is standing by the window watching Mary who is removing capsules from
within her pillow case and placing them on her bed side table.) I’ve stopped taking them like you said.
Mary:
Jarod: Good girl. Mary I’ve found the car in the water. I found Erica.
Mary: (She starts to cry.)
Jarod: (Jarod pulls up a chair in front of Mary who is sitting cross legged on the bed.) Mary,
do you think you could tell me about the night when you tried to escape?
Mary: Oh ah, I see things, in my head. I’m not sure what to believe.
Mary:
Jarod: Trust yourself. (Jarod gently touches her on the knee.) Dr Blythe doesn’t have
control of your mind any more.
Mary: Erica and I had become friends here. She was kind and funny. After a while I could
tell there was something bothering her. And then she told me.
Jarod: What did she tell you?
Jarod:
Mary: That she was going to have a baby. (Jarod is surprised by this revelation.) Dr Blythe
gave her the baby. He took advantage of her during her therapy sessions. Dr Blythe wanted the baby to go away but she was scared. Confused. So I decided to help her escape.
Jarod: So you ran away through the woods but something stopped you. (Flashback ?Mary
and Erica are running through the woods. They stop by a tree and watch as a pair of
headlights belonging to a Mercedes that is driving towards the lake.)
Jarod:
Mary: Headlights. Doctor Blythe. He called out to her. He said he wanted to talk to her
about keeping the baby. (Flashback. Mary tries to hold Erica back but Erica pulls away
from her.) I told her not to believe him.
Jarod: She went to talk to him anyway.
Jarod:
Mary: There was no talk. (Flashback. Blythe hits Erica three times across the face with the
flashlight.) It all happened so fast. He hit her so hard she stopped moving. I could see he
was panicked. (Flashback. Blythe picks up Erica and places her in the front of the car.) I
was frozen with fear. (Flashback. He pushes the car and it hits the water and sinks.) I didn’t
know what to do. Erica was in the water.
Mary:
Jarod: You tried to save Erica but Dr Blythe saw you. (Flashback. Mary jumps into the
water. Blythe turns when he hears the splash.) You surprised him because he thought that
Erica had tried to run away by herself. (Flashback. Blythe dives into the lake after Mary.)
Mary: He held me under the water until the car came. (Flashback. Dr Blythe is struggling
with Mary pushing her head under the water.)
Mary:
Jarod: The car? (Flashback. A car approaches a bright spotlight being shone out the
window. PWPI is written on its door. It stops.)
Jarod:车?
Mary: The orderly. (Flashback. Jimbo gets out of the car with the spotlight, and calls out to
Dr Blythe who is struggling with Mary in the water.)
Mary:
Jarod: Jimbo? So now he had a witness. He couldn’t kill you so he dragged you out of the
water and then he concocted this story about two escaped patients one who got away and the
other who was suicidal and incoherent.
Jarod:Jimbo?
Mary: (She nods.) I’m not crazy.
Mary:
Jarod: No Mary. You’re not crazy. Dr Blythe gave you this medication so you would think
that you were crazy so that you couldn't tell your story. But it’s time that someone told the
truth, for Erica, and for you.
Dr Blythe’s Bedroom
(Dr Blythe is woken by the ringing of the phone. He raises himself onto
one elbow turns on a lamp and answers the phone.
Jarod: Dr Blythe? (Jarod is sitting in the fork of a tree by the lake. In the background a big
spot light illuminates the area.)
Jarod:Blythe医生。
Blythe: Yes?
Blythe:
Jarod: This is Trooper Raines, Maryland state police. Sorry to get you up so early.
Blythe: I’m a busy man. I get up early every day. How can I help you?
Blythe:
Jarod: It’s not what you can do for me it’s more what I can do for you. Good news. We
found your car.
Blythe: My car?
Blythe:
Jarod: 1994 Mercedes. ZYP 959. (Jarod is swinging the number plate around.) A couple of
fishermen found it submerged out at Wilson Lake.
Dr Blythe: Did they find anything, in the car?
Blythe:
Jarod: Well it’s still too dark to be sure of anything except that it is indeed your car. It’s
funny though.
Jarod:
Dr Blythe: Funny?
Blythe:
Jarod: It looks like it’s been down there a couple of years but you’ve never missed a
registration payment and never reported it missing. I guess you must really be a busy man.
(Jarod disconnects before Dr Blythe has a chance to respond.)
The Centre
Sim Lab
(Broots is sitting at his computer with Sydney on one side and Miss Parker
on the other.)
Broots: In all the psychiatric institutes in North America 20 have John Does admitted in the
last few days.
(The door to the Sim Lab slides open.)
Mr Lyle: Found anything yet?
Mr Lyle:
Broots: Well we’re getting close. We’re down to the last ten here.
Broots:
Parker: Pleasant Woods Psychiatric Institute. Towsan, Maryland.
Mr Lyle: It all seems way too easy.
Mr Lyle:
Parker: Believe me cuckoo boy is there.
Parker:
Mr Lyle: But why would he leave us a trail that would lead straight to him?
Mr Lyle:
Sydney: It’s simple. It’s Jarod’s way of telling us that he is still in control.
Parker: Bus is leaving. Save you a seat?
Parker:
Wilson Lake
(Dr Blythe arrives on the scene, spots his car, which has been dragged from the water by a tow truck. He looks around, and once assured that no one is around to witness his actions, runs over to the vehicle. He peers through the front window but is perturbed to find the front seat empty.)
Jarod: Erica’s not in there. I gave her the dignity that you wouldn’t. (Jarod is leaning
against a tree.)
Jarod:
Blythe: What are you doing out of the asylum?
Blythe:
Jarod: Repaying a debt. For two women. One whose life you stole and the other whose
mind you nearly destroyed.
Blythe: You’re mad.
Blythe:
Jarod: Well it’s a mad, mad world. But don’t worry you’re not going to be in it much longer.
Blythe: You’re no patient. (He tries to walk away but Jarod moves swiftly, gets him in a
headlock, drags him back to the car and places his on the front seat. He closes the door,
sealing the doctor inside.)
Blythe:
Jarod: And you are no doctor. Just another coward running from the truth.
Jarod:
Blythe: No! Let go of me. Let me out of here. (He tugs at the door handle but to no avail.
It has been disabled.
Blythe:
Jarod: (Jarod bends down and peers at the doctor through the window.) I thought maybe
you would like to go for a little ride in your car.
Jarod:
Blythe: Please?
Blythe:求你。
Jarod: Erica didn’t have the opportunity to plead for her life. Or Mary, when you started to
feed her hallucinogens to make her think she was crazy.
Jarod:Erica
Blythe: You don’t understand. I didn’t have any choice. Please let me out of here.
Blythe:
Jarod: Hmm. No! (He walks back to the tow truck and disengages the break that is holding
the car in position. The car starts to roll back into the water.) Three victims. Three ruined
lives. One who died, one who has to live with that memory. And an unborn baby who never got a chance. I wouldn’t want to have all that on my mind when I met my maker. I’d feel like . . . you do now right now. (Dr Blythe is frantic as the water starts to come into the car. He is yelling and banging on all available surfaces of the vehicle.)
Rupert County Psychiatric Facility
(Doctor Blythe, unconscious and still damp, is strapped into a straight jacket and propped up in a wheel chair. He is being pushed by an orderly and accompanied by a doctor. Jarod
walks along behind, now dressed as a doctor, white shirt and tie with wire-rimmed glasses,
hands behind his back.)
Doctor: You know he’s lucky that you came along when you did, Dr Ratchet or he would
have drowned himself sure enough. But we’ll take care of him.
Blythe: (Dr Blythe wakes up with a start.) No!
Blythe:不!
Jarod: He’s suffering from classic paranoid schizophrenia, delusional behaviour and total
self-destructive tendencies. I’m ordering full time restraints and complete isolation.
Blythe: You got to No. He tried to kill me. (The orderly and the doctor help him out of the
wheel chair and the orderly leads him into a padded cell closing the door. Dr Blythe looks
out through the observation glass.)
Blythe:
Doctor: Sure he did. Don’t worry we’ll make sure that he doesn’t hurt himself.
Blythe: He’s not a doctor. He’s a mental patient. I’m the doctor.
Blythe:
Jarod: (Jarod peers at the distressed doctor through the observation window.) We’ll be back
to do an evaluation in 72 hours
Jarod:
Blythe: Don’t believe him. I’m the doctor. I am not crazy. I am not crazy! (He bangs his
head against the glass in frustration.)
Blythe:
PWPI
(Dr Goetz is leading the way down a corridor, Miss Parker and Mr Lyle following with Jimbo bringing up the rear.)
Dr Goetz: Doctor. Tell me again, where did you say you practiced?
Dr Goetz:
Parker: Our primary clinic is in Delaware where Jarod is maintained.
Dr Goetz: Here we are. (They stop outside of Jarod’s cell and Jimbo unlocks the door. Miss Parker marches into the room first to find it empty.)
Dr Goetz:
Parker: And there he went. (She turns and leaves and Mr Lyle follows her. Dr Goetz looks
around in puzzlement.)
Parker:
Dr Goetz: Jimbo notify the gate we have a possible escapee.
(Dr Goetz notices the corner of Jarod’s drawing pad protruding from under the pillow. She
opens it to find an envelope with her name on it and a drawing of a building that Jarod has
labelled “The Centre? On the next page is a pencil sketch of Miss Parker and the thumbless
man, Mr Lyle. Dr Goetz looks up to the door through which Parker and Lyle have taken their leave.)
(Outside, Mary is examining the newspaper article of Dr Blythe’s misdeeds. “Psychiatrist
Charged of Murder of Patient? Dr Goetz approaches her and looks at the article over her
shoulder.)
Dr Goetz: Your family’s very excited about you coming home Mary. You’re going to be
okay.
Dr Goetz:
Mary: I know I am.
Mary:
Dr Goetz: Come on.
Dr Goetz:
The Centre
Miss Parker’s Office
(Miss Parker is standing behind her desk looking sightlessly out the window. She turns when the door opens and Broots enters. He is carrying a file folder.)
Parker: I’m the one who missed boy wonder again. Why are you the one who looks like you swallowed a razor?
Parker:
Broots: I might feel better if I had. The genetic blood test results on your brother.
Broots:
Parker: Conclusive?
Parker:
Broots: Oh yeah!
Broots:
Parker: Tell me it’s Angelo.
Parker:
Broots: I wish I could.
Broots:
(He places the folder on her desk and a photo of Mr Lyle protrudes from the folder.)
The Centre
Mr Parker’s Office
(Miss Parker enters and puts the file that Broots had given her re her brother in front of her
father. He opens the file and looks up. From his reaction it is evident that he already knew
that Lyle is his son. Mr Lyle opens the door and Miss Parker and he exchange a look that is far from loving.)
